The railway network in Sri Lanka is one of the most scenic ways to travel across the island. However, following recent severe storms and infrastructure damage, several railway sections are currently under repair.
At present, only certain corridors are fully operational. Some routes require a combination of train and road transport until repairs are completed. Travelers should plan journeys carefully and check updated service conditions.

Main Railway Lines in Operation
Although parts of the network remain under repair, several major routes are still running and continue to serve key destinations across Sri Lanka.
- Colombo – Galle – Matara (Coastal Line): Fully operational with beautiful ocean views along Sri Lanka’s southern coast.
- Colombo – Anuradhapura – Jaffna – Kankesanthurai (Northern Line): Long-distance intercity trains operate normally to the northern peninsula.
- Colombo – Polonnaruwa – Batticaloa: Eastern line services continue to operate through central Sri Lanka.
- Colombo – Gal Oya – Trincomalee: Cross-island services to the eastern port city remain available.
- Colombo – Negombo – Chilaw – Puttalam: Regional trains operate along the north-western coastline.
Important Service Changes on the Hill Country Line
The famous hill-country railway between Kandy – Nanu Oya – Ella – Badulla is currently partially affected by storm damage.
Some sections between Kandy and the upper hill-country stations are temporarily not operating. As a result, travelers planning to visit Ella must combine road transport with train services.
Kandy – Ella Travel Advice
At the moment, it is generally not possible to travel directly by train from Kandy to Ella.
The recommended option is:
- Take a taxi or bus from Kandy to Ambewella
- Then board the train from Ambewella – Ella
This section still passes through the most scenic part of Sri Lanka’s hill-country railway, including tea plantations, mountain valleys, and famous railway bridges.
However, train tickets for the Ambewella – Ella section are extremely limited and sell out quickly.
Important tip: travelers should book tickets at least 30 days before departure to secure a seat.
Alternative Route: Ella – Ambewella
Because the Ambewella – Ella section sells out quickly, many travelers choose the reverse direction:
- Ella – Ambewella by train
- Then continue by road to Kandy
This option still offers the same spectacular scenery and often has better ticket availability.
Train Types and Seating Classes
Train services in Sri Lanka are typically categorized by speed and stopping pattern.
- Intercity / Special Express: Fastest trains with limited stops.
- Express / Semi-Express: Connect major regional stations.
- Local / Slow trains: Stop at most stations and are mainly used for short-distance travel.
Common seating classes include:
- Observation Saloon (First Class): Panoramic viewing coach available on selected scenic trains.
- Air-Conditioned Saloon: Reserved seating in air-conditioned cabins.
- Second Class Reserved: Fan-cooled seating with opening windows.
- Third Class: Budget seating, commonly used by local passengers.
Popular Train Routes Currently Operating
Colombo – Galle – Matara
The southern coastal railway is one of the most scenic ocean-side train journeys in Asia.
Travel time: Colombo – Galle about 2–2.5 hours
Colombo – Jaffna
This long-distance route connects Sri Lanka’s capital with the northern region.
Travel time: around 6–7 hours
Colombo – Batticaloa
Cross-island railway connecting western Sri Lanka with the eastern coast.
Travel time: around 8–9 hours
Important Travel Advice
- Due to ongoing railway repairs, some routes may require combining train travel with taxi or bus transfers.
- Hill-country trains (especially Ella routes) are extremely popular and sell out quickly.
- Booking tickets at least 30 days in advance is strongly recommended.
