Sri Lanka Railway Map 2026
The railway network in Sri Lanka remains one of the most scenic ways to explore the island. Following severe storm damage in 2026, several sections of the network required extensive repairs. As of the latest update in June 2026, many major routes have already been restored and passenger services are gradually returning to normal.
Travelers should note that some railway sections remain under repair, while others have recently reopened after reconstruction works. Please refer to the latest railway map below.
Map explanation (Updated June 2026):
- Green lines: Passenger train services currently operating.
- Red lines: Railway sections temporarily not operating due to repair works.
Main Railway Lines in Operation
Several important railway corridors have now been restored and are operating normally.
- Colombo – Galle – Matara (Coastal Line): Fully operational with spectacular ocean views along Sri Lanka's southern coast.
- Colombo – Anuradhapura – Jaffna – Kankesanthurai (Northern Line): Long-distance services to northern Sri Lanka are operating normally.
- Colombo – Polonnaruwa – Batticaloa: Eastern Line services continue to operate.
- Colombo – Gal Oya – Trincomalee: Trains remain available to Sri Lanka's eastern coast.
- Colombo – Negombo: Services operate normally on the western coastal section.
- Nanu Oya – Ambewela – Haputale – Ella – Badulla: This famous scenic section has now been fully restored and reopened.
Major Update: Nanu Oya – Ella Railway Reopened
Good news for travelers visiting Sri Lanka's hill country.
Following several weeks of reconstruction work, the railway section between Nanu Oya, Ambewela, Haputale, Ella, and Badulla has been successfully repaired and reopened.
The first passenger services on the restored route are scheduled to operate from 18 July 2026.
This means travelers can once again enjoy one of the world's most beautiful railway journeys through tea plantations, mountain valleys, tunnels, and spectacular viewpoints.
Important Service Changes on the Hill Country Line
While the scenic section between Nanu Oya and Badulla has reopened, some sections further north between Kandy and Nanu Oya remain affected by repair works.
As a result, direct train travel from Kandy to Ella is currently not available.
Kandy – Ella Travel Advice
At present, the recommended travel option is:
- Take a taxi or bus from Kandy to Nanu Oya or Ambewela
- Continue your journey by train from Nanu Oya or Ambewela to Ella or Badulla
This route covers the most famous and scenic portion of Sri Lanka's hill-country railway.
Book Early – Seats Sell Out Very Fast
Since train services have recently resumed, tickets departing from Nanu Oya are currently in extremely high demand.
Many departures sell out shortly after reservations open.
To guarantee a seat, we strongly recommend booking at least 30 days before your travel date.
This is especially important for:
- Nanu Oya – Ella
- Nanu Oya – Badulla
- Ella Odyssey services
- Observation Saloon and First Class seats
Alternative Route: Ella – Nanu Oya
If tickets from Nanu Oya to Ella are sold out, travelers may consider the reverse journey:
- Ella – Nanu Oya by train
- Continue to Kandy by road transport
The scenery is equally spectacular and ticket availability is often better.
Railway Sections Still Under Repair
According to the latest railway map update (June 2026), several sections remain temporarily closed:
- Peradeniya Junction – Kadugannawa – Nawalapitiya section
- Mannar branch line
- Puttalam branch north of Bangadeniya
- Matale branch line
- Several connecting branch sections shown in red on the map
Passengers traveling through these areas should use alternative road transportation where necessary.
Train Types and Seating Classes
Train services in Sri Lanka are typically categorized by speed and stopping pattern.
- Intercity / Special Express: Fastest trains with limited stops.
- Express / Semi-Express: Connect major regional stations.
- Local / Slow trains: Stop at most stations and are mainly used for short-distance travel.
Common seating classes include:
- Observation Saloon (First Class): Panoramic viewing coach available on selected scenic trains.
- Air-Conditioned Saloon: Reserved seating in air-conditioned cabins.
- Second Class Reserved: Fan-cooled seating with opening windows.
- Third Class: Budget seating, commonly used by local passengers.
Popular Train Routes Currently Operating
Colombo – Galle – Matara
The southern coastal railway remains one of the most beautiful seaside train journeys in Asia.
Travel time: Colombo – Galle approximately 2–2.5 hours.
Colombo – Jaffna
Long-distance services connect Sri Lanka's capital with the northern peninsula.
Travel time: approximately 6–7 hours.
Nanu Oya – Ella – Badulla
The most famous scenic railway route in Sri Lanka is now operating again from 18 July 2026.
Travel through tea estates, mountain ridges, tunnels, and iconic viewpoints including the Ella region.
Colombo – Batticaloa
Cross-island railway connecting western Sri Lanka with the eastern coastline.
Travel time: approximately 8–9 hours.
