Baggage Policy

Overview

Sri Lanka Railways (SLR) provides passengers with a complimentary luggage allowance depending on ticket class. To ensure the comfort and safety of all travelers, luggage must be stored according to the regulations outlined below. Passengers are strongly encouraged to secure their belongings, as SLR will not be liable for lost or stolen luggage.

Hand Luggage (Carry-On)

Overhead racks in passenger carriages are suitable for one large backpack or a medium-sized rolling suitcase. Passengers should ensure hand luggage does not block aisles or inconvenience fellow travelers.

Free Luggage Allowance

The free luggage allowance is based on ticket class as per SLR regulations:

Heavy or oversized luggage is not permitted onboard, as storage space is limited. Passengers must place larger items in designated luggage cabins, subject to availability.

Large & Oversized Items

Bulky luggage, large suitcases, or oversized items must be placed either in the dedicated luggage cabin or on the floor of the carriage if permitted. For extremely large baggage, passengers should:

• Arrive at the station at least 1 hour before departure
• Contact railway staff to arrange loading into the luggage carriage (subject to space availability)
• Follow staff instructions for labeling and securing items

Prohibited & Dangerous Goods

For safety reasons, the following items are strictly prohibited onboard:

• Firearms, weapons, or ammunition
• Flammable substances or fireworks
• Toxic or poisonous materials

Important Recommendations

• Passengers are advised to bring luggage locks and secure all bags before boarding.
• Due to high occupancy on Sri Lanka trains, it is strongly recommended to keep valuables within sight at all times.
• SLR accepts no responsibility for lost, stolen, or damaged baggage.

Summary

Each passenger is entitled to bring luggage free of charge, within class-based weight limits. Oversized items require special handling, and passengers are responsible for storing and securing their own belongings.
